Zinc sulfate is a widely applied chemical in floatation minerals separation, which is generally to separate copper. It’s well known to us that zinc sulfate includes zinc sulfate monohydrate and zinc sulfate heptahydrate, which both can be used in mineral separation. In worldwide scale, the customers who have mineral separation inquiry to us usually choose zinc sulfate heptahydrate instead of zinc sulfate monohydrate. Why is that?

Zinc sulphate monohydrate and zinc sulphte heptahydrate are belongs to the zinc compound. What the difference between them? Rech Chemical co. ltd would like to share the following information for you.

First, appearance difference: zinc sulphate monohydrate is a white fluency powder; zinc sulphate heptahydrate is white crystalline powder. As for zinc sulphate granular, monohydrate or hetpahydrate cannot tell the difference from appearance, only by test the zinc content know the difference.

Second, zinc content difference: zinc content in zinc sulphate monohydrate powder is 35%min, while zinc content for heptahydrate powder is 21.5%min. As for zinc sulphate granular: zinc content for monohydrate is 33%min, for heptahydrate granular is 21%min. zinc granular is made by zinc powder through Pan Granulation, therefire, zinc content in granular is lower than powder.

Third, Water solubility difference: In general, zinc sulphate heptahydrate is easier to soluble in water because of contains seven water moistures. But from the inner control of production, the water insoluble matter of monohydrate and heptahydrate is both below than 0.05%. The measurement and calculation of zinc content in zinc sulfate

Rech Chemical Co., LTD generally supplies our customers with 33% zinc sulfate monohydrate and 21.5% zinc sulfate heptahydrate. We often receive some customers’ inquiry how does the zinc content come out?

The content of zinc in zinc materials is measured and calculated in EDTA coordination titration method. The main theory is that zinc sulfate solution is added with ammonium fluoride and potassium iodide (It may be added Oxidation hydrogen oxidation to remove ferric iron impurities and the interference to zinc content). Under PH 5~6 conditions, the solution is titrated with Ethylene Diamine Tetraacetic Acid. It’s indicated by xylenol orange that the color changes from magenta to lemon yellow.

At last, we can get the zinc content of zinc sulfate through EDTA standard titration measurement and quality score (%).

Why zinc sulphate turns yellow?

In our sample cupboard, there are different batchs of zinc sulfate samples. The day before yesterday, I sorted all inventory samples out and found that some bags of zinc sulfate sample were stocked too long that appeared light yellow and their liquidity is not very good.

Generally speaking, as long as well preserved, zinc sulfate wouldn’t go bad. The mainly reason for zinc sulfate becoming yellow is that the package is not tight enough that make product long time exposed to the air. The products will combine with water in the air as hydrate. This affects fluency. Moreover, the impurity in the air would pollute it too. So the color of zinc sulfate slowly changes from white to light yellow.

On the other hand, the period of validity of zinc sulfate is about one year.  It s a normal phenomenon, when zinc sulfate samples becoming yellowing after it stocked over one year.

Another reason of making zinc sulfate yellowing is the content of Fe over common level. Therefore, in order to guarantee the quality of the zinc sulfate, such as the purity, liquidity and so on, seal the products well and stock in ventilated, cool warehouse. Remember to keep it away from fire and heat source and avoid to be mixed with other chemicals.
